Solana Beach School District Transitional Kindergarten Program

• November 1st for the 2012-13 school year
• October 1st for the 2013-14 school year
• September 1st for the 2014-15 school year and each school year thereafter 

This change in the Education Code created the Transitional Kindergarten program, a two-year kindergarten experience for students. Students in this program learn oral language development, pre-literacy skills, early math skills, large and small motor skills, development and enhancement of appropriate social and emotional skills, and self-regulation skills that promote success in school. 

The Solana Beach School District first offered Transitional Kindergarten in the 2012-2013 school year. Transitional Kindergarten in our district is a full-day class that begins and ends on the same schedule as the other Kindergarten classes offered at the school site. Transitional Kindergarten teachers have a California teaching credential and experience with primary grade instruction.

The district will continue the program in the 2013-14 school year with one class at Solana Vista School and one at Carmel Creek School. Please note:

• Students that turn 5 years old between October 2 and December 2, 2013 will be eligible for placement in Transitional Kindergarten
• There will be no waiting list for students born prior to October 2
• Enrollment will occur during the regular kindergarten registration time period, no early registrations will be accepted
• Parents that have visited a school to express interest in the program must still complete an enrollment packet during registration
• Proof of residence is required; only students who live in the Solana Beach School District will be enrolled in the program
• Every effort will be made to place students close to their home schools
